SHOES: Live for the Trend, or Go Basic?
8:01 AMGood evening loves! Before I do begin, I just wanted to let you know that I've finally decided to join the bandwagon that is Twitter.. didn't really think i could handle more accounts of stuff anymore, but I figured that this will be great for keeping in touch with all of yez. That said..

Tonight, my mind is reeling thinking about SHOES. Just like a lot of you, I spend way too much on shoes and I buy way more than I actually need.. like a comment well-stated by a friend of mine, "money can never buy happiness, but it can buy shoes, and shoes make me happy." Yep, story of MY life. My pulse literally skips a few beats whenever I see new releases from my favorite shoe designers--and while those are not usually available within my means(hello seventy thousand pesos?), I have always found reasonable alternatives.
Shoe geniuses, all: Nicholas Kirkwood for Belstaff, Givenchy, Alexander Wang
But how do you feel when a trend gets too overexposed, overworn, and tired? There were just TOO MANY strappy bootie/sandal hybrids when I went out over the weekend, and it just left too much to be desired. But seriously, I want to know how you feel. DO you believe that a shoe style loses its spark the moment it infiltrates too many closets? Or you're just perfectly fine with that, or would you rather just move on with another trend? Do let me know!:)
the hit strappy sandal: way too trendy?
That said, going back to basics sounds good to me at this moment. Matter of fact, I'm sure we've all noticed that a lot of designers have recently "retrograded", highlighting the clothes more and opting for classic styles for their shoe collections. Then again, I'm definitely not sure about letting go of my strappies and other uber-trendy shoes just yet, but from what I have seen, definitely something I'm considering these days.
Jimmy Choo
Gucci
Bruno Frisoni
Okay, I've so made up my mind. My next purchase will most probably be a pair of basic patent black platform pumps.. and that's the reason why designers like Christian Louboutin will be all the rage ALWAYS. After the current trend gets way too tired, they know that we'll always go back to them:)
So.. do you live for the trend, or love to go for the basic?

Let's see...I'm not really a shoe crazy girl at this moment in time. I do admire lots of the architectural shoes that are out there today, but I don't go out spend lots of money on shoes. I'm sure eventually I will go shoe crazy, but for now I live in the variety of flats I have.
ReplyDeleteBut yes I do agree that some shoes are getting a little trendy. I'm not sure how I feel sometimes about the masses having the same trendy type of shoe, but if you can take your own spin on them and dress them differently than others may then I say go ahead and rock those shoes like no other girl has them!!! =)
i try not to splurge on trendy shoes or i'd feel too guilty. my way of shopping for shoes is i usually go for whatever catches my eye; anything that stands out from the ordinary (or reduced to a crazy affordable price haha). plus i really love classic designs, so i guess (hope) i don't fall into the trend trap too much.
ReplyDeleteOhhh great post! I might go for the trendy ones..but try to find a less expensive alternative. If I see one more pair of gladiator sandals I'm going to scream too...
ReplyDeleteI love the classic Gucci's you picked...and of course can't go wrong with Loubs.
XOXO
I go for the basic.Flat, comfy and basic style that can be worn year round, though can't help it, I bought a pair of high heeled gladiator sandals from the summer sale. Just to prove that you can never say NO to shoes. Have a nice day tomorrow. :)

I am a shoe freak too!!!!!!!!! I tend to go for styles that were exhausted months ago then I'm like okay, everyone's sick of them but I never wore them so I can look at them with fresh eyes (and get them on sale) haha. But you're right, classic is always best.. it'll never go out of fashion! xoxo
ReplyDeleteThose are all some awesome shoes. Hope you had a cool weekend. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteBasics are good. You can never go wrong with basics. The only downside is that they get boring. I mean, I don't think I'd go crazy over plain black pumps as I did when I saw those Nicholas Kirkwoods. Gooorrrgeeous.
ReplyDeletewow! they're all pretty. i love them. Wish i have all the money. hihihi
ReplyDeletelove glad seen u last sat... sorry been really drunken everytime we bump into each other... :( anyhoo, will post some bloggin maybe tomorrow with the photos too... where should i grab the photos youre friends took too? xxxx
ReplyDeleteLove the Givenchy's. I've been on Jak and Jil lusting over shoes a lot lately. I like to have some basics, but I don't try and jusst blindly follow trends. I prefer just getting what I like instead of taking a "keeping up with the Joneses" approach.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really crazy about shoes and I believe that a pair of classic shoes can be worn forever. If I do have unlimited cash however, of course I'll buy all the latest shoes! I'm into gladiator style shoes and shoes with a lot of laces and straps!! xoxoxoo
ReplyDeletemy fave: Nicholas Kirkwood, but Givenchy, Cl and etc too. I'm a shoeaholic...LOL!
ReplyDeleteX♥X♥
you have great taste my dear!!!
ReplyDeletelove the first few especially!!
x
Hi Eden!=) I emailed Maggie your email ad na.. I would love to meet up but I'm afraid my crazy duty sched won't permit me to do so.. kaasar.. I love classics too but lately the newer shoes are just so ME, are so my taste, that I felt that they are the new classics for me.. As for me my ultimate classic is the YSL Tribute Pumps but for now I'll have to dream muna because Medical Intern = ZERO salary..=P
ReplyDeleteps.. speaking of overexposed and tired: I'm sick of this 1 particular type of generic hardcore gladiator sandals I see everywhere in Manila.. (I know you know this too!)=P
I love classic shoes,
ReplyDeleteI tend to splurge more on basics and buy cheap trend led shoes
Hi Eden! Hope all is well. I've def. become a shoe person recently! I used to never be one and always just stuck to the basics. Then I think I started reading blogs and became jealous of all the amazing shoes people were wearing. :) I def. am a mix of both.. live for trends but always have my trustworthy black pumps. I mean, I need to stick to the classic shoes for work attire. I don't care if everyone and their mom has the trendy shoe either.. that's never been an issue for me. Those Givenchy shoes you listed are divine!! Hope you have fun finding your next pair of shoes and can't wait to see the pics of them. :) Hope you have a great week!!

Haha your friend's quote is amazing! I really have become more of a shoe addict over the years. Even guys need more than two pairs of shoes ;) I know what you mean, the strappy hybrids are becoming a bit much as of late. Those Jimmy Choos are absolutely beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteok, so I really like all those shoes, but my favorite are the first pair! I want them!!
ReplyDeleteI love the first shoe picture and the last one. I think I'll stick with the basics, and maybe sometimes I'll buy the trends, but I wouldn't spend to much money on them!
ReplyDeletexoxo
Oooooooh Simply because "Shoe addiction" can easily excite Fashionista's senses into a scorching Hysteria's state !!!
ReplyDeleteps: These Dizzy "Gucci" platform Heels are "fetishistically" Breathtaking.

Hmm I think ti just depends on what I like. Sometimes it is the basic and other times it is the trendy shoe.
ReplyDeleteBlah! And I know what you mean, but think of shoe purchases this way: they're works of art!
hi eden! I love this post, it is such a dilemma too. I remember fitting a pair of Manolos, they look so impeccable and perfect on the feet. But those trendy shoes! My friend and I sat infront of the Givenchy alcove and just stared in worship :D Basics I guess will never go out of style.
ReplyDeletethose shoes are uber beautiful. they are crazy!
ReplyDeleteHi eden :) I enjoyed reading your post!
ReplyDeleteI always go for basics like black pumps and flats.. but I wanted to try other styles too! Just don't know where to put them as I have loads of shoes already! lol
xxxx
I think you should pay a lot of the classics, and buy cheap versions of the trends. There's nothing worse than paying a lot of money for something and then seeing every single badly dressed girl wearing the rip off version that they bought for $20. Obviously you can never wear them again once that happens!
ReplyDeleteblack pumps are the ''must-have'' for me.
ReplyDeletei can wear them with jeans/ dress.
wish i could afford to buy them all.
Ooh, I loved this post! I too am a bit of a shoe lover and I don't really discriminate between designer and no-name, as long as they're comfortable and well-made (i.e. I can't wear plastic shoes... they actually give me a rash). I also don't pay too much attention to trends. In Paris, gladiators are everywhere and I generally don't like them, so I never bought a pair. The strappy shoe-boot can only be seen in the fashion-set... it's too edgy to be worn during the day. I bought a pair by Givenchy which I love and will probably wear forever.
ReplyDeleteI don't really think there is a trend or no-trend when it comes to shoes. As long as you wear it with style and confidence and it works with your outfit. To be fair though, Louboutin has also brought out some pretty trend-driven shoes no one would wear beyond the season ;-) I think it's just important to have a good mix of basics and edgier pieces... similar with what you'd do with your wardrobe. Life and fashion would be pretty boring if everyone wore the classics...
Amen to our love of shoes. And too to the fact that knock-offs or inspirations need to be purchased when a few thousand is just not viable. Still, agree with you completely about some overrated shoe knockoffs. I see them and cringe. Why!!!
ReplyDeletep.s. I really should start a shopping blog to sell the shoes I never wear. I have ALOT of pairs that have never seen natural light. Shame on me :/
Hope you're going well bella

hi eden, i have just followed your twitter :D
ReplyDeletehmm.. i am a shoes lover too, but i dont mind seeing the shoes type occupying too many closets because i think it is back again to who and how they are wearing it. style is never complete without attitude, so one kind of shoes wont look same on different feet. i am a kind of trend follower but i think the most important thing is that those shoes fit me and is comfortable to walk on. :)
sorry for the super long comment
xoxo,
fhen
For expensive shoes - I go for the classic. I'd hate to throw hundreds of dollars into something I'd wear for one season. But for trendy ones, I'd go for cheap/affordable ones. =)
ReplyDeleteHope all is well with you girl!
i'm all for basic, classic, simple pieces! but of course im always drawn to those crazy kinds but i always fall back on the simple ones haha
ReplyDeleteThey say you're either a shoe girl or a bag girl, and I've definitely always been a shoe girl (Although, please feel free to get me a gray medium sized Balenciaga bag.. thanks!). Right now, I find myself lusting over shoes that my brothers call hooker heels (Which is very mean of them). So yes, I'm in to the "trend" right now. However, I think it's important to still have basics in your closet, because trends easily come and go, like you said.
ReplyDeleteThen again, I'm saying I love the trends as I'm surrounding by girls wearing Hollister/Abercrombie with Uggs. So I guess trends aren't played/worned out where I'm from.. thankfully :)
So many fantastic pieces!
ReplyDeleteFM~FP~AF
my style always goes for the classics, so i'd easily choose the classic black pumps anytime of the day. besides, it's pair-able with almost anything.
ReplyDeletebut then again, it also wouldn't hurt to throw some trendy shoes every once in a while.
btw, i got you an award. check it out at
http://overdressedme.blogspot.com/2009/07/i-got-award-today-from-honey-of-playing.html
enjoy ur day!
So you admit you're an addict, right? Haha :D I love your picks, especially the Gucci pumps!
ReplyDeleteHope you return soon! You've received an award on my most recent post! :) Hope all is well!
ReplyDeleteFor shoes, if they are expensive I rather pick the most classic ones...for more years of use!
ReplyDeleteThose strappy sandals look good. I always like shoes that carry the straps up and over the ankle. I like the appearance of the footwear and I think that this gives more support to the feet. I would feel more comfortable in a pair of heels that have those straps than a pair of high heels that don’t.
ReplyDeletelet your good thoughts come out and play. write away!
